Transforming the Food Aid Model from the Perspective of the Right to Food: The Case of La Botiga del Prat

The current food aid model, reliant on surplus food distribution and an asistentialist-based approach inherited from beneficence, has failed. In light of an ecosocial crisis due to the collapse of the current food system there is a growing emphasis on the right to adequate and healthy food, prompting the exploration of alternative basic goods provision services. In this line, La Botiga, a community empowerment initiative, is pioneering transformative practices to guarantee the right to food following social economy and sustainability criteria. This model serves as a testing ground for scalable solutions. This article collects the evolution and evaluation of three vectors of change: the impact on the axis of food guarantee in order to explore if the changes made have improved the coverage of this basic right, the participation and the governance quotas achieved, and satisfaction is analyzed in the different dimensions of the service. The conclusion includes reflections on the challenges and strengths of the service with the aim of providing new transformation tools to the food system as a whole of which it is a part.
