FREE-DVV

The FREE project aims to tackle economic violence by promoting financial education, and economic autonomy and independence, strengthening professional skills and promoting political advocacy actions to advance towards a comprehensive approach to economic violence.

Context

Economic violence against women is a form of gender-based violence that limits their access to and control over financial resources, perpetuating dependence and making it difficult to leave violent relationships. Despite its high prevalence—present in 99% of cases of gender-based violence—it remains largely unrecognised and unaddressed. The FREE project was created to address the training gaps identified among professionals and inter-institutional collaboration, but also the lack of or limited access to financial education resources tailored to the needs of survivors.

Objectives

Address economic violence by strengthening the capacities of teams of professionals working with survivors of economic violence.

Improve detection, intervention and support in cases of financial abuse through specialised training, educational resources and advocacy actions.

Promote policy advocacy by encouraging recognition of economic violence in all sectors and improving legal and social responses.

Ensure equitable and barrier-free learning with training and work materials that are accessible, socially and culturally adaptable, and available in multiple formats and languages.

Activities

Design, development and evaluation of a support guide for professionals dealing with cases of economic violence, with the active participation of 100 professionals.

Creation, evaluation and implementation of a free, accredited open online course (MOOC) by the University of Tartu (Estonia), aimed at professionals.

Development and practical evaluation of an interactive online workbook aimed at survivors of economic violence.

Organisation of political advocacy events with the participation of relevant external entities (institutions, professional networks, civil society organisations, etc.).

Preparation and dissemination of a report with policy recommendations on economic violence at European level with national adaptations.

Creation of dissemination materials to promote more informed and more proactive communities in front of economic violence: infographics, short videos, newsletters, press articles, etc.

Dissemination of the results and materials generated by the project, both internally and externally, in their respective institutional, professional and community environments.
