{"id":171370,"date":"2025-09-03T14:17:17","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T12:17:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abd.ong\/?p=171370"},"modified":"2025-09-03T14:37:00","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T12:37:00","slug":"abd-group-joins-international-letter-calling-on-who-to-protect-harm-reduction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abd.ong\/en\/drugs-and-health\/abd-group-joins-international-letter-calling-on-who-to-protect-harm-reduction\/","title":{"rendered":"ABD Group joins international letter calling on WHO to protect harm reduction"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Association Bienestar y Desarrollo (ABD Group) has joined the initiative led by the\u00a0<em>International Network of People who Use Drugs<\/em>\u00a0(INPUD),\u00a0<em>Harm Reduction International<\/em>\u00a0(HRI), and the\u00a0<em>International Drug Policy Consortium<\/em>\u00a0(IDPC), addressed to the World Health Organization (WHO)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>ABD Group is endorsing the letter promoted by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/inpud.net\/\">INPUD<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/hri.global\/\">\u00a0HRI,<\/a>\u00a0and<a href=\"https:\/\/idpc.net\/\">\u00a0IDPC<\/a>, urging the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/\">WHO<\/a>\u00a0to safeguard its dedicated capacity and leadership on harm reduction at a time when budget and staffing cuts threaten to undermine its role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The document, signed by civil society organisations from around the world,&nbsp;<strong>calls on WHO to protect its expertise, leadership, and presence in the field of harm reduction<\/strong>, in a context of severe financial and staffing cuts that risk weakening its historic role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The letter recalls that\u00a0<strong>WHO was a pioneer among United Nations agencies in supporting and promoting harm reduction, developing key guidelines and endorsing evidence-based policies that have contributed to saving lives from preventable risks such as HIV, hepatitis C, overdoses, and other drug-related harms.<\/strong>\u00a0The text stresses that\u00a0<em>\u201cthis is a crucial moment to defend that legacy and ensure that public health policies continue to put people at the centre.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative also highlights the need to ensure the meaningful involvement of people who use drugs in decision-making processes and policy design, as well as to avoid setbacks in funding and political commitment to harm reduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organisations interested in joining this global call can do so until\u00a0<strong>Wednesday, September 3 (end of day)<\/strong>\u00a0through the<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSeU8GfC3o5XZc3FRs4XyjSe-C_AWHaF8vcI-aJKPLLHMn5vUA\/viewform\">\u00a0following form<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The final letter will be sent to WHO Director-General <strong>Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus<\/strong> on Thursday, September 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ABD Group encourages other organisations and collectives to share this invitation across their networks, to strengthen the collective message of support for harm reduction as an essential component of people-centred public health responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Association Bienestar y Desarrollo (ABD Group) has joined the initiative led by the\u00a0International Network of People who Use Drugs\u00a0(INPUD),\u00a0Harm Reduction International\u00a0(HRI), and the\u00a0International Drug Policy Consortium\u00a0(IDPC), addressed to the&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":171374,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1308],"tags":[2810,4962,4958,4961,4963,4960,4959,3209,4964],"class_list":["post-171370","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-drugs-and-health","tag-drugs-en","tag-hri-en","tag-idpc-en","tag-inpud-en","tag-international-drug-policy-consortium-en","tag-international-network-of-people-who-use-drugs-en","tag-oms-en","tag-reduccion-de-danos-en","tag-world-health-organization"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
